Soft Buns

Total Time: ~1.5 hours

Ingredients

  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 (.25 oz) packages dry yeast
  • 1 cup milk
  • ¾ cup water
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • ¼ cup white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, stir together 2 cups of flour and the yeast.
  2. In a microwave-safe bowl or measuring cup, heat milk, water, oil, sugar, and salt until just lukewarm (not hot).
  3. Add the warm liquid to the flour mixture and beat until smooth—about 3 minutes.
  4. Gradually add 2–3 more cups of flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  5. Dust a clean surface with flour, turn the dough out, and let it rest under an overturned bowl for about 10 minutes.
  6. Divide dough into 12 portions, shape into slightly flattened balls, and place on a greased baking sheet.
  7. Cover loosely and let rise until doubled in size (about 30–45 minutes, depending on room temp).
  8. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake for 12–15 minutes, until tops are golden brown.
  9. Let cool slightly before slicing or serving.

Notes

  • You can brush the tops with melted butter for extra softness and shine.
  • These freeze beautifully—just thaw and reheat gently in the oven or microwave.
  • Perfect for sandwiches, burgers, or dunking in soup.
